About the position

KOMODO is seeking a VFX Artist to define the visual identity of Nanos, a competitive PvP game built in Unreal Engine.

You will create high-quality, stylized real-time visual effects that enhance gameplay, communicate impact, and bring clarity to fast-paced action. This includes crafting particle systems, materials, and visual feedback that make abilities feel responsive, readable, and satisfying.

Your focus will be on creating effects that are both visually striking and performant, with a strong emphasis on timing, motion, color, and shape language. You will work closely with designers, artists, and engineers to ensure VFX supports gameplay clarity and elevates the overall player experience.

The ideal candidate has a strong artistic eye and a passion for real-time effects, with the ability to balance visual quality and performance. You enjoy collaborating across disciplines and take pride in creating effects that not only look great, but also enhance how the game feels to play.

Tools and Technologies

  • Unreal Engine (Niagara, Materials, Blueprints)
  • Version control (Git)

Requirements

  • Strong proficiency creating real-time VFX in Unreal Engine (Niagara, Materials)
  • Strong sense of timing, motion, color, and visual readability
  • Ability to create stylized effects that support gameplay clarity
  • Understanding of performance considerations for real-time effects
  • A portfolio or reel demonstrating real-time VFX work
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines
  • High proficiency in English communication. The ability to clearly explain technical concepts and creative ideas is strongly preferred

Nice to haves

While not specifically required, tell us if you have any of the following.

  • HLSL
  • Deep profiling tools
  • Low-level optimization (RenderDoc, Unreal Insights)
  • Experience creating effects for stylized or anime-inspired games
  • Familiarity with lighting, post-processing, and real-time rendering optimization
  • Background in both technical implementation and creative problem-solving
  • Japanese communication ability is a plus

Hiring Process

    Initial Screen

    30 minute video call with HR, focused on whether you generally match.

  2. 2

    First Video Screen

    30 minute video call with 2 team members, where you’ll be able to ask questions about the position.

    Homework Assignment

    You’ll be given an assignment which you’ll have about a week to complete.

  4. 4

    Two Back-to-Back Interviews

    This pair of interviews will focus on your skill. It consists of a one hour interview with two team members, a 15 minute break, and then another one hour interview with two team members.
