About the position

We are looking for an iOS developer to help build out KOMOJU’s merchant-facing application. This is a unique opportunity to shape how merchants begin their journey at KOMOJU. You will be creating mobile experience from onboarding to managing financials, viewing reports and accepting payments through Tap-to-Pay. You’ll be building the app from the ground up, so you’ll have significant influence over technical and product direction, architecture, and coding standards.

We’re looking for someone who has experience creating smooth, intuitive user experiences and who brings a strong sense of ownership to the entire product lifecycle - from design to production.

Our ideal candidate has extensive experience working on mobile applications on iOS and can also collaborate with Android engineers to ensure consistent, high-quality experiences across both platforms. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn other languages and platforms and contribute across different tech stacks to ship the best mobile experiences on both iOS and Android.

While we are a remote-first company, this position is based in Tokyo, and we expect candidates to be willing to relocate to Japan.

Responsibilities

  • Develop KOMOJU application on the iOS platform.
  • Collaborate with product managers and other developers to define, design, and ship new features.
  • Technical design and architecture review across both mobile platforms (iOS and Android).
  • Work across tech stacks with backend engineers to design and implement features for mobile applications.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience.
  • Strong experience with modern iOS SDK and mobile development lifecycle.
  • General knowledge of Android platform and Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs to connect mobile applications to back-end services.
  • Strong knowledge of mobile UI/UX principles, best practices and Apple’s and Google’s design guidelines.
  • Generalist (T-shaped developer), able to jump between multiple areas of our tech stack to get the job done.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Nice to haves

While not specifically required, tell us if you have any of the following.

  • Knowledge of cross-platform frameworks for iOS and Android.
  • Experience working for a Japanese business.
  • Intermediate-level proficiency in Japanese.

Hiring Process

  1. 1

    Initial screening call with HR

To understand candidates’ overall professional background, career aspirations, and to evaluate the fit for the role/ culture.

  2. 2

    Take-home exercise

It’s opportunity to evaluate candidates’ practical experience and observe that they follow best practices. This includes, but is not limited to, their coding skills, problem-solving abilities, system design capabilities and ability to optimize and maintain code. We normally give the applicant one week to complete it, but we don’t expect it to take more than 2 hours.

  3. 3

    Technical team interview

This interview serves two purposes: it’s a chance to review the take-home exercise and assess the candidate’s technical abilities, and it also helps evaluate their soft skills, how well they collaborate with stakeholders and team members, manage their work (time management, prioritization, adaptability), and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

  4. 4

    Final interview with leadership

We’re looking here to assess culture add. We’re not looking for people that just fit the status quo (culture fit), we want candidates who can bring something new and valuable to our culture. While ensuring that they still align with our core values, we want to assess their ability to adapt to recent changes within the organization and to help guide the organization through its next stage of development.
