About MorningStar

MorningStar Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

MorningStar is a VC-funded Tokyo startup helping job seekers discover career opportunities they might otherwise miss. Its small, English-first team is preparing to launch its first product.

About the position

We need someone with fluent-level Japanese to test our product from the perspective of a real Japanese user — catching issues with functionality, language, tone, and usability that a non-fluent speaker would miss. This is hands-on product QA, not a coding role.

We’re looking for a minimum of a 3-month commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Test the app across features and flows, identifying bugs, inconsistencies, and rough edges
  • Review Japanese-language copy and UI text for naturalness, tone, and correctness (as a fluent speaker, not a professional translator)
  • Refer to English PRDs and communicate with PDM to confirm product understanding
  • Report issues clearly, with enough detail for the team to reproduce and fix them
  • Provide feedback from the perspective of our target users
  • Work directly with our founding PDM, engineering teams, and design teams on test cycles and priorities
  • You must already hold work authorization valid in Japan (Japanese citizenship, permanent residency, a spouse/dependent visa with work rights, or a student visa with 資格外活動許可 permitting part-time work). We’re not able to sponsor a new visa for this internship, though there may be a path to a full-time role — and full sponsorship — later.

Requirements

  • Fluent-level Japanese
  • Comfortable using a smartphone app in detail. A test device (Android and/or iOS) can be provided if you don’t already have access to one — no need to own the right hardware to apply.
  • Attention to detail and ability to communicate issues clearly

Nice to haves

While not specifically required, tell us if you have any of the following.

  • Prior QA, customer support, or product feedback experience
  • English or Chinese language ability (not required, but useful for team communication)
  • Familiarity with Figma
  • Interest in the recruiting/job-search space in Japan

Compensation

¥1,500–2,200/hour (depending on experience), hours negotiable

Hiring Process

  1. 1

    Chat with Product Manager (Online)

  2. 2

    Interview with HR representative (Online)

To confirm basic terms and residency status.

  3. 3

    Interview with Product Manager (In-person)

If you’re based near another major hub (Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, etc.), we’re open to traveling to meet you there instead.
