About PayPay

PayPay Minato-ku, Tokyo

With over 70M million registered users (as of July 2025), PayPay is the country’s most popular mobile wallet used by approximately one out of every two smartphone users in Japan.

Key benefits

  • International engineering team
  • Incredible scale

About the position

We are accelerating the modernization of PayPay Bank’s customer-facing website and internal back-office systems.

To support this transformation, we are looking for hands-on and collaborative Frontend Engineers who can take ownership of product delivery, work closely with cross-functional teams, and help us build scalable foundations for future development.

You will have the opportunity to contribute not only to individual product features, but also to frontend architecture, development processes, and engineering standards across the organization.

Why This Position

  • Legacy System Modernization. Some important banking services still run on legacy JSP systems. Their business rules and workflows may be spread across old code, documents, and team knowledge. Frontend Engineers work with Product Managers and business teams to understand the current behavior, clarify hidden requirements, and simplify complex workflows. Based on this understanding, engineers propose modern and maintainable technical solutions. The challenge is not simply rewriting old code. It is to:
    • Understand the existing business rules and dependencies.
    • Decide what should be kept, improved, or removed.
    • Design modern frontend architecture and API integrations.
    • Migrate step by step without disrupting banking operations.
    • Turn complex legacy systems into solutions that are easier to maintain and develop.
  • End-to-End Ownership. For new features, you will not only receive a design and implement it. You will be involved from the beginning to the end:
    • Understand the product idea.
    • Suggest product and design improvements.
    • Review Figma designs with Designers.
    • Design the frontend solution.
    • Align API requirements with Backend Engineers.
    • Implement and test the feature.
    • Support QA and release.
    • Monitor the feature after release.
  • Open Engineering Culture. We encourage engineers to identify problems and create improvement proposals. You can propose improvements to the product, user experience, architecture, or development process. We also keep meetings simple and protect engineers’ focus time.

Examples Projects

  • Shared Pagination Standard. Identified pagination inconsistencies across back-office systems and proactively collaborated with designers to establish a company-wide pagination standard, driving UI consistency and improving developer efficiency.

Tech Stack

We select the best combination of tech at times.

  • TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML/CSS
  • Vue.js, React, single-spa, JSP
  • AWS, GH Actions, Terraform
  • GitHub, npm/yarn, Webpack, Jest, i18n, Storybook
  • Sentry, Kibana, Google Analytics, Firebase
  • Figma, PlantUML, draw.io, Miro
  • Slack, Zoom, Confluence, Jira

Responsibilities

  • Work with Product Managers, Designers, Backend Engineers, and QA Engineers to deliver features.
  • Review product requirements and Figma designs, and suggest improvements.
  • Design and implement frontend solutions using Vue.js and TypeScript.
  • Align API requirements with Backend Engineers.
  • Work with QA Engineers on testing and issue resolution.
  • Monitor released features and resolve production issues.
  • Participate in code reviews and improve frontend best practices.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of industry experience developing secure web frontend applications in JavaScript and/or other transpile-to-JavaScript languages.
  • At least 1 year of industry experience with VueJS (preferred), or React.
  • Software engineering best practices and computer science knowledge.
  • Business level of English.
  • Hands-on experience with AI/LLM tools (e.g., ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, CodeWhisperer, or similar) in professional software development.

Nice to haves

While not specifically required, tell us if you have any of the following.

  • Experience with frontend performance monitoring and optimization.
  • Experience with iOS or Android development, either with the native toolkits or with a framework such as React Native.
  • Experience with designing server side RESTful APIs.
  • Experience with web hosting infrastructure such as CDNs.
  • Ability to conduct business in Japanese (native-level proficiency or equivalent to JLPT N1/N2).
  • Proven track record of integrating AI-assisted development into system design and delivery.
  • Contributions to AI-related open-source projects or automation of workflows with AI is a plus.
