About the position

As an engineering manager your mission is to maximize the output of engineering. You will utilize your communication skills and technical background to allow individuals and teams to work together to achieve common goals.

At Degica, engineering managers play a crucial role in supporting the company vision and ensuring the stability and health of both the engineering teams and the system. They work closely with product and engineering to refine the “what” and “how” of features being built. They play a major role in scaling engineering through identifying and improving processes, and ensure everyone is working towards a clear and consistent goal. They work closely with the engineers to support their long term career goals and job satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure engineering teams are efficiently achieving their goals
  • Provide mentorship and guidance through 1-on-1’s and performance reviews
  • Set expectations with engineers and hold them accountable for project deliverables
  • Participate and improve process around engineering onboarding, training and hiring
  • Define processes to increase productivity and ensure adoption across engineering

Requirements

  • 3+ years of engineering management experience
  • Technical experience building and working on large-scale software products
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work with the product owners to provide context to inform projects and timelines
  • Ability to collect and provide meaningful context to help inform the developers’ technical solutions
  • Ability to provide thoughtful feedback to help developers improve their skills
  • Ability to work across teams and departments to unblock developers and improve productivity

Nice to haves

  • Experience building and working on large-scale software products
  • Solid understanding of software development best practices
  • Understanding of concepts like technical debt and continuous integration
  • Knowledge of the Ruby programming language
  • Able to speak Japanese

Compensation

¥13,000,000 ~ annually.

Hiring Process

    Initial screening call with HR

    To understand candidates’ overall professional background, career aspirations, and to evaluate the fit for the role/ culture.

    Take-home exercise

    It’s opportunity to evaluate candidates’ practical experience and observe that they follow best practices.This includes, but is not limited to, their coding skills, problem-solving abilities, system design capabilities and ability to optimize and maintain code. We normally give the applicant one week to complete it, but we don’t expect it to take more than 2 hours.

    Technical team interview

    This interview serves two purposes: it’s a chance to review the take-home exercise and assess the candidate’s technical abilities, and it also helps evaluate their soft skills, how well they collaborate with stakeholders and team members, manage their work (time management, prioritization, adaptability), and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

    Final interview with leadership

    We’re looking here to assess culture add. We’re not looking for people that just fit the status quo (culture fit), we want candidates who can bring something new and valuable to our culture. While ensuring that they still align with our core values, we want to assess their ability to adapt to recent changes within the organization and to help guide the organization through its next stage of development.
